Vital trainborne equipment supporting radio communication between train drivers and signallers is the focus of a specialist repair centre at Multipulse’s Woking factory.
Following on from its key role in the installation of GSM-R cab radios in existing fleets, the company now helps train operators ensure maximum serviceability for their radio systems.
Multipulse managing director John Fitzsimons says: “Each cab radio has an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) so that a driver can communicate with the signaller if the normal power supply fails. The UPS units are extremely rugged and are designed for the rail environment, but they still have components that may fail and require replacement – either because of a failure or as a precaution.
“Our GSM-R repair centre handles up to 50 UPS units a month. We hold a stock of repaired units, so that operational issues can be minimised.”
Multipulse also provides replacement antennas – and a full repair service for GSM-R handsets, which are used typically by ground staff in depots and yards. Cab radio units are maintained by the manufacturer, Siemens.
